What is Sedentary Behavior?

  • any waking, sitting or lying behavior with low energy expenditure
  • the average adult spends more than half of his/her waking hours in sedentary behavior

Implications of Too Much Sedentary Time

  • excess sedentary time is associated with diabetes
  •  an increased chance of developing metabolic syndrome
  •  a higher risk of all-cause mortality
  • sitting for long periods increases the risk for abdominal obesity

Tips for Reducing Sedentary Behavior

  • standing desks
  • stand or walk during coffee and/or lunch breaks
  • stand when on the phone
  • get off the bus a few blocks early
  • use stairs instead of the elevator
  • exercise at a moderate to vigorous level a few days a week at minimum
  • limit time in front of the TV or computer
